So today on my way to pick up some dinner, my truck up and decides it wants to stall out in Drive. I was coming up to a light, noticed my O/D lights blinking, and boom, dead. I put it in neutral, started it back up, put it in drive, stalled again. Pushed it into the parking lot, grabbed my dinner, go to show my old man what it was doing, so I have him start it up, and it runs fine! So I start to head back home, about 5 minutes later, flashing O/D light again. Started it up in neutral, put it in reverse before the light turned green, slammed it in first and drove it home. Now my question is, what would cause this, is it a heat related issue, and how can I start to diagnose it? I've got knowledge on trucks, just not transmission related problems. And to my luck, my 93-97 book isn't really helping.

All help is greatly appreciated.

Well start by throwing the Haynes book in the trash and buying a real shop manual.

Your torque converter is locking up when it shouldn't. Your code is for the converter clutch solenoid and indicates an electrical failure.

I would start by replacing the solenoid itself, which would be the farthest rear on the passenger side of the truck once you drop the pan.

I'll definitely do that first one first thing in the morning. I read it had something to do with the converter clutch, just didn't know where to find it. I'll be on it bright and early in the morning. I appreciate it, and i'll let you know tomorrow how it went. Do you know the pricing roughly on a new solenoid?

Oh, should it be an OEM from Ford or would one from AutoZone hold me over?

I don't know the pricing off the top of my head. If it was my vehicle I'd prefer a Ford unit, but in dire straights an AutoZone one would be good enough. Ford base # is 7F037. Should help them find it faster.

surprisingly, Ford is cheaper than AutoZone. 173 compared to 253. I'll have to give them a call tomorrow.

So I took it to where I got the transmission rebuilt last time, pulled the pan, and was covered in metal flakes. Truck is now going to sit until I can drop a 5.0 and trans into it. Not dumping another $1,500 for a 4th transmission. Thanks for your help adsm08.
