My 2006 Ranger has axle code 97: 8.8, 4.10, 28-spline.

What is the easiest (read: cheapest) way to turn this into a limited slip diff?

Is it possible to swap the carrier from an FX4 into the open diff of my truck?

What about the carrier from the FX4 level II? What is the difference between the limited slip diff from the FX4 level II and the plain old FX4?

Hmmm, so it seems like at FX4 axles are 31-spline, so I do not think the FX4 carriers will fit in my 28-spline.

I wonder, what are good aftermarket limited slip carriers available to a 8.8/4.10/28-spline rear end?

Just swap in an entire axle that has limited slip.

i entirely agree, one of the above. swapping in an axle is kinda a big job, but its all fairly basic work. putting in a lunchbox locker is fairly straight forward, but its a locker, not a l/s. as for swapping in a different carrier? that's gonna require setting up gears. not something the average shade tree mechanic wants to tackle.

I agree. This will be the easiest and potentially cheapest depending on where and when you find an axle.

Axle swap is what I may have to do. I don't want to put in a lunchbox, as this is a daily driver and is only a '10% off-roader'.

Wenier-peg isn't exactly close to Eau Claire.

Adsm, its Winterpeg.

And your right. Winterpeg isn't exactly close to anything. lol

Someone on here has it down as "weinerpeg" in their profile.

I'd find an explorer axle with LS. swap out all the guts and axle shafts and you'll have a 31 spline axle without having to unhook yours. Also if the explorer axle doesnt have 4.10's you can just swap your ring gear and pinion in place of the explorers.

Doesnt work that way...31 spline stuff wont fit in a 28 spline housing. The widths are different as are the bearings.
