i have a 98 ranger 4cyl 2wd manual trans. today on highway at 70 it acted like it popped out of gear and i could hear motor revving like crazy i let off gas and it felt like it cought and jerked a little and stuff i pulled off the side of the road as smoke was comming out of center where shifter is. now when i try to move it makes this whining noise also sounds like metal is grinding metal when i try to drive. had it towed home just drained trans fluid and there was barely any in there and it smelt so burnt. also a lot of metal shavings on inside drain plug. does this sound like bad transmission to you. truck has 245xxx miles. when it first happend i thought it was clutch since it has never been replaced now im thinking trans though. thought i would ask what the experts think thanks guys

Not an expert but Yes, trans needs to come out.
Might want to shop around for a used one if money is tight, or even if its not, reads like trans may be toast.
But nothing better than to look inside and see :)

Sounds like your input and counter shaft gears stripped. It's common.

Something leaks, fluid goes low, pocket bearing goes out, input shaft is misaligned under torque, wears the teeth right off.

If your confident with your mechanical inclination, it's time consuming, and about a 6 out of 10 on the difficulty scale.

so once i remove it ill be able to tell if its toast. how would i tell after removal

Once you remove the trans you can take the top plate off and look inside to see all the broken stuff.

Your '98 4cyl should have a Mazda M50D-R1 manual transmission.

You can read about it here
http://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/ManualTransmission.html

A M50D-R1 from an '88 to '99 Ranger with 2WD should fit, but be aware, when they use a trans for 11 years it can be hard to find used one, because people buy them up when theirs fails.

I would get on the phone and find any used pricing, then call a transmission shop and find out the price of a rebuild or exchange.

Rebuilding it yourself parts will probably be about $200-$400, but that won't be a useable number until you have seen the damage.

thanks everyone. appreciate it i just removed the trans and popped open the cover and like the second ring in has parts of the gear snapped off around it. figures thats a good indication its bad lol. heading to the local pull your part yard to get another trans tmrw. thanks for your help again ill post again when i get it rite

180 bucks. I can't even get away with changing a tire for that half the time !! Haha

Glad you got her on the road.
