lol, all I was saying is that none one can just flat out say that there is 100% no gains. I mean just slapping a drop in k&n gives you a tiny bit of performance. The thread was started to see what CAI's there are for the 93 4.0. When people say CAI that's what they mean, a conical filter on a big smooth tube. I'm not saying that's a true CAI, but that's what they are called. I didn't invent the term.
Anyway I don't state that my setup will out perform anyone's, CAI or stock, I can just say that having a flowmaster and the new coil pack and what not, it is better. Especially since I just put stock back on to pass smog last week. I was just saying that the airflow is why people buy them, not because they are sucking cold air.
I just find it lame that people who run it stock are so sensitive about it.
If they made a modified stock setup, with a different, less obstructed in flow hole, and a less restrictive path to the TB I'd throw that on before the "CAI".

I was referring to the temp. difference between the engine bay, and outside air.
I was about 105 yesterday, and I've measured the engine bay temp before, and its usually about a 30-55 degree difference.

This could be an interesting experiment. Get two temp sensors, one in the engine bay, one in the normal spot for an ambient temp sensor. See what the difference is.

I've done it before. Its not a big difference when the hoods up, but down its about 40 degree difference while running. Granted this is just idling, but I figure the rushing air while driving is probably evening out the extra heat of the throttle.
I did it to see the difference, because I was well aware of the benefits of cooler air. End of the day it just wasn't a large enough difference to sway me to stay stock.
Anyone who's driven around early in the morning while its cold and foggy, and the air is dense has probably felt a difference in their vehicle which is CAI, but that's much much colder and denser than regular air.

I totally get this part. I used to have a 78 Olds Omega, with the 3.8 and 2 barrel Rochester. The carb was all boogered up and couldn't be adjusted.

My uncle had pulled all the emissions stuff, including the ducting from the wheel wells to the air cleaner.


It ran ok in the summer but had some issues with E10. When the temps got below 50 that sucker ran. And I mean it RAN. 3-speed auto and unknown rear end gears. I drove it home from school in late fall once, probably 40 or 50 out, less than 1/4 throttle and she was running 80 MPH.
 
On my Mustang, back in April, I switched from an underhood K&N conical filter that attached directly to my MAF to a factory panel style Fram Air Hog. With the K&N it always ran balls out when it was cooler outside, and ran like ass when it was hot outside. It seems a lot happier now, running much more consistent. I believe that not only was the underhood air temp affecting it, but also the disturbance of air from the engine fan was messing with my MAF. This is one mans experience on a different vehicle than the Ranger in question, so take it or leave it. And based off of that experience, I will say that although you may see a difference at times, I believe that across the board a drop in filter gives you more of a benefit.


Just my 3 cents.
 
Here's my "CAI" I brewed up from parts from my local autozone. I did this swap on my 4.0 ranger and my 3.0 ranger I used to have and I noticed a substantial sound difference in both not to mention some more power. It still draws air from outside I removed the air duct and all the plastic tubes so it draws air from behind the headlight just like stock but allows more air into the combustion chambers

Here's a better picture for the bracket. I bent it and secured it with some bolts and zip ties
