ok first off im new here(not to forums though lol)
i have searched everywhere and cant find a similar problem, not with an answer anyways.
truck is a 99 ranger, 3.0, 5spd(manual) 7.5 rear end

all fluids have been checked and are good!

ok so problem is, that it is making a constant whining sound while in gear, most noticeable in 3rd, 4th, 5th. and 30mph+ and even more so when in gear, and i let off the gas? sound also completely goes away the second i push the clutch in??

i brought the truck to AAMCO, and they told me it was a pinion bearing in the differential?? i just dont get how if it is that, the sound would go away when the clutch is pushed in? cause the rear end(pinion) is still spinning, no?

i was also told by another shop that it is the throw out bearing? but from my understanding the throw out bearing should only make noise when the clutch pedal is pushed in? which is when my sound goes away...

thanks in advance! any help/advice is appreciated!!!

Just throwing out suggestions - it's not coming from your radio? When I first got my truck it whined through the speakers, and it turns out it's a semi-common problem with some Rangers, and my dealer put in a suppression kit to deal with the problem.

My guess would be throw out or input pilot shaft bearing, Might as well replace both & the clutch / pressure plate as your going to drop the trans to do any of the above.

No def not the radio, way to loud and I turn it up to drown out the other sound cause its so annoying lol but thank you!

As said though can't be throw out bearing right? And ya I guess pilot bearing is a possibility, hmmmm
Thanks for reply as well

Any other ideas guys? I would like as much input as possible before tearing anything open. Appreciate it!!

i had the same problem in my 98 4.0 and it went away when i did a clutch job

Dont rule out the throw out bearing, just because it stops when you push the clutch in, if you tear it apart I would replace everything for the clutch while your in there, otherwise you may be doing it twice.

Ya if I'm in there ill replace all that I can, do any of the bearings in there have to be pulled or pressed on/off?

Thanks again

Also, where can I get a good price on clutch kit?

Pilot bearing will need to be pulled out, small slide hammer will work just fine on it for pulling the old one out, I am sure you can find a socket that is just a tad smaller than the outer race of the new bearing and carefully tap it straightly back into place with light but deliberate blows.
