Looks like my trans is missing a few things...

I have a 1995 5-Speed 3.0L 2WD Ranger. So, I was working on my exhaust today and I saw this:

I can see my pressure plate from outside of my trans! D: I'm assuming it shouldn't be like that? What's missing? The trans doesn't really shift right. I have to wait a couple seconds before I can get into each gear. Any idea what could be causing that? The previous owner did a lot of stupid things to this truck, and one of them was installing a stage 3 clutch. Could my issue with shifting be related to a botched clutch install?

And I noticed this under my shifter boot:

Am I missing a nut on one side? That would explain why my shifter feels loose...

Thanks for any help guys.

The only thing I see missing is the rubber inspection plug in the bell housing. You are not missing a nut on the shifter, it is supposed to be like that. To remove the shift lever you take the nut off, put it on the other side, tighten it down and it pulls the bolt out which lets the shifter pull straight up.

Your shifter feels loose because at least one of two things is going on.

1) Your shifter bushings are shot, not hard or expensive to replace.

2) Your rails are shot, which is my problem.

Your disengagement issues are probably related to some idiot putting a racing clutch in a Ranger that can't produce the power to use the setup that was put in it.

It's not a disengaugement issue, it pops out of gear fine. The problem is that i have to hold the shifter up to each gear for a few seconds before it drops in. Would this be caused by the same thing?

That would be caused by wrong oil (gear oil doesn't "squeegee" out of the synchros quickly enough because the synchros were DESIGNED for the vastly less viscous and non-filming ATF.

OR it could be a "sticky" pilot bearing.

Any suggestions for which MTF to use? I figure that's the cheapest option, so I'll try that first.

And if the clutch does not DISENGAGE properly it doesn't go back in once you stop. Disengagement issue.
