Sorry if this has been posted 10000 times but my phone won't let me search.

So here's my situation. My 3 year old HP DV6998ca crashed on me tonight(vista), random blue screen pops up so I turned off the computer but it won't boot windows now. Says "opperating system not found ". It won't let me go into system restore either.

So am I SOL with this and just save up for a new laptop, or does anyone know a solution?

Check that no usb drive/disks/anything is attached. Might be trying to boot from that and thus.. no boot.

If still nothing then it will probably be a dying harddrive. Just gotta plug it into a desktop to salvage the data and transfer it to a new one..

But, check for no cd first!

Thats a dead hard drive. you could see if you can save some data. take it to a local computer shop before trying it again.

I took out the CD and memory card. But nothing. I did notice the hard drive was making a quiet clicking sound. Ill save up for a new computer(most likely desktop) and save the hard drive from the laptop and hopefully save the.data.

Thanks for the.help guys!

About an hour ago I just solved that problem.

My Gateway model # something-or-other with XP Media Center Edition, kept going bezerk and I couldn't even shut down Firefox.exe in the processes tab of the Task Manager. So I held the power button down for 5 seconds to power it off, since it wouldn't go through the proper shutdown process.

I tried about 15 times and it would only halfway boot up. I even left it sit for 2 hours and it still wouldn't boot up completely. I have no recovery disk for it.

This thing had been causing lots of problems lately.

Well no machine deserves the right to piss me off as much as this thing has so I took it outside and smashed it into a million pieces with a cinder block. I even broke the cinder block into several pieces.

No more piece of **** laptop. No more stress. Problem solved. My next one will be an Apple/Mac.

It's heat. This Acer Aspire One is slow, relatively, but it runs cool compared to my previous laptops. I've had it 2 years and it's never blue screened or even locked up. I never had a laptop that made it more than 6 months without a warranty call. Right now I'm, on TRS, working on a drawing on a 20" external monitor, and have a Mash rerun going in the background. That's about all I need from this thing and it does it well. No more laptops for me. Laptops try to compete with desktops and fail. Netbooks are what laptops should try to be.

I agree with ya Will. Going to save up for a nice desktop and get a netbook to have just in case I need the portability.

This is my plan for when my laptop dies

I highlighted the problem for anyone who couldn't find it on their own.

That was a particularly problematic model.

My HP dv4 has treated me great... I've crashed it a time or 2 but never the laptops fault.
I almost bought that dv6 one time to till I read some reviews. They are TERRIBLE on that one.

Mine did treat me well for the 3 years. No issues really ... until it decided to loose its OS

I've had "invisible hard drive syndrome" on several computers. My recently deceased laptop, and the desktop I'm using now. I'll turn it on and after the initial boot screen I'll get an error cuz it ain't finding the hard drive at all. The laptop asks for a setup disk and the desktop will just say something like it's stupid and blind or whatever. But I just hit the "God-damn-it" switch and try again and it fires right up. I don't know what causes that but it's not a big deal cuz it's rare.

i agree with will, laptops shouldn't compete with desktops at all. for the odd times i need a portable computer, i have my old pentium2 laptop running xp. its not fast but it does what i expect from a laptop.

BTW, clicky harddrives = your SOL.. best to just buy a replacement drive and start over, although data recovery can be possible sometimes..
