I'm planning on doing the brakes in the rear of my truck. The shoes are thin, and they are dragging badly. I've replaced shoes before(different ranger), but never replaced the cylinder back there. I'm doing this at the advice of a ford garage tech. My question is:do I need flare wrenches, I know it will need to be bled. The garage of course says it's a complicated process with ABS but I know the general principal of bleeding brakes(2 people). How about brake fluid life? The same garage told me I needed that changed as well. I want to make sure I'm not getting hosed. This is on an 03, 60K, w/ ABS, 4wd

Yes, you should use flare nut wrenches, otherwise you'll just end up stripping the line fitting. It's not complicated to bleed brakes with ABS unless you get air into the ABS module (you won't). I was told you have to cycle the pump to get the air bled out when this happens, but I've never done it. Since you're only replacing the rear wheel cylinders, there's no chance in hell of that occuring.

It's not a bad idea to flush the old fluid out but you're trucks only 4 years old. Brake fluid (DOT 3 and 4) will absorb water from the air over time. If you've got an opened can that's been sitting around for awhile don't use it in anything but an old beater. To change the fluid out, simple bleed the brakes until fresh fluid comes out the rear and don't forget to keep the level up in the reservoir.

Its VERY impotant to never let the reservoir get low while bleeding them brakes
