Look at the balancer and see where (if any) the seal has worn a grooove.. Then insert the seal OUTSIDE the groove (either more shallow or deeper).. So it will be wearing it's own groove in the future.

When I replaced mine I had the timing cover off the the truck and on the bench. I seem to remember there was much more "space" for the seal then needed. I do not really remember why but when I was done the seal was "recessed" back toword the inside of the timing cover. It was not sitting out flush with the front of the timing cover. This was a few years back....I am thinking that I put the new one in right where the old one was. I do remember the old one being recessed also....hope this helps.
