need some help here??

Engine is a 2.8 84 model. I'm overhauling my 2.8. The old motor has two short medal sleeves that are in the large holes on the block in the front. The fresh block I just bought doesn't have those small sleeves. Also the gasket set only has two small gaskets that fit in there. It looks like the small sleeves would have to be there to keep the front timing cover from leaking. If there not thats great but I can't get the old ones out to reuse them? Any ideas??

I've never had a 2.8 apart, just a 4.0. But the 4.0 looks like that except no seals are used there, but the gasket surface is much wider instead. I would say you need the little metal tubes in there. In your picture that seal has a deep press mark from something pushing into it. That would press the seal tightly against all the surfaces in there. I would try to get those sleeves out.

2.8 takes the tubes, rubber o rings go around them.

Well I got one of them out using a torch. I still had to pry it out which bent it up where I can't use it. BUT..now that I have the measurements of it I made two from some old tubing. There wasn't a O-ring or a place for an O-ring. It looks like all they do is hold the gaskets in place so when the front cover is locked down it smashes the gasket into the block. Now I got to get the front seal on and I dont' have the tool to install it or center the front cover..I think the gasket in the overhaul set is taking place for the factory O-ring I think

Look for those "O" rings - if I recall correctly, they are needed.

There's no O-rings in the gasket set and there wasn't any on the factory sleeves that I removed, they were smooth, but I might cut a groove in the pieces I made and put an o-ring on them just in case. They are a really tight fit anyway..

Hmm.. When I did it, even the craptastic ROL gasket set I got had the o rings.

the gaskets were flat, not "round" O-rings, but they fit perfectly. I used plenty of permatex just in case.

It could have been that the ones that were in it were hand made too. They didn't look like the ones in the repair manual.

Right on that flat round gasket comment - like hose washers. (Again from memory)

The manual says no gasket sealer on those "flat washers" . Well, I didn't listen...its got plenty...
