Um, sidewall patching? bad idea?

probably a bad idea, but damn, this tire is practically brand new!

the sidewall probably flexes too much to make a patch safe right? im just trying to save some money, no i dont want to kill myself or others.. its about a 2" gash, and yes i mean remove tire, patch from the inside..

my girl wasn't exactly thrilled...

i was out 2wd wheelin some powerlines, i had to hit a few ledges hard to make it up them, not sure when i gashed it, didnt notice till i hit a dirt road..

as i said the tire is practically brand new, maybe 2000 miles on it (i didnt purchase them anywhere i have a warranty or anything though).. if its not safe to patch for daily use, is it at least safe to patch for a spare?

There isn't much you can do with a sidewall gash like that. Only time you can fix them is when they aren't all the way through the tire, you can have then vulcanized.

I've seen tire shops patch them from the inside, but yeah nothing to do on the outside.

I got a cut in a front tire on my F-150 so I took it back to where I got them to get it fixed (I didn't notice the cut) They sold me a new one for what treadwear I had used on the old tire that had been on the truck for a year and a half. So for $37 I walked out with a brand new tire, and I didn't get the roadhazard warrenty either. I would try that route first anyway, the worst they can do is say no.

If they're pretty new, see if they have road hazard coverage so you get a new one for pretty cheap.
The couple times I've had a sidewall leak, the tire shop wouldn't even touch it.

A cut against the grain (the best way I can explain it) is a waste. Even if a tire shop did patch it for you, it will just come off. If it was cut vertical (with the grain of the tire) they can usually hold up if not to big, and even then I wouldn't want to have it on my daily driver. I have some old trail tires that were slashed, so they were free and then one that was cut like yours only lasted about 2 days and it wasn't that bad. The patches just won't stick with the tire flexing around, sorry but that tire is toast.

yea i've accepted that... im looking for a used 33 bfg at to replace it.. in the meantime i have the best one out of my 5 old 33" Pro comp M/Ts on the truck...

anyone thing old school for a second.........tube maybe? put it on a steel rim, maybe get a tube from a AG dealer that will fit the tire. Its worth a shot, at least you can get the rest of the life out of the tread.....

No, NOTHING you can do will make that tire safe on the road, putting a tube in it would only allow it to be safely used as a temporary spare just to get off the trail (but not continue onto the highway).

ya, i wasnt exactly sure about how safe it would be on the trail, but i figured its worth a shot, i didnt mean to imply that it was safe for on road use

I thought BFG had a pretty good warranty for sidewall damage? I know a couple guys in our club have returned the BFG MT's after gashing the sidewalls.

i dunno, as i said, i bought them off someone else, who bought them new.. i dont think they'll replace a tire for me, being as i didnt buy it from a dealer or anything...

i was pricing a new tire out.. and ran across this:

"Three-ply polyester carcass-Trigard construction with two, full-width steel belt reinforcement uphold durability, and improve stress distribution for enhanced resistance to regular wear, making these BFGoodrich tires unlike any other."

EDIT: just went over the BFG limited warranty, which technically only covers the original purchaser, on the original vehicle.. but either way, it says they do not cover "Road hazard injury (e.g., a cut, snag, bruise, impact damage or puncture)"

I had a sidewall patch on a tire of mine before. Front 35 with a small sidewall imperfection and I could not get the damn thing to hold air. Repatched it like 5 times them finally got some money for new front tires.

With was on a trail only truck that was trailered to the trail, I would never try it on a street driven truck!!!!!!!!!!
