first off my BII is leakin like a quart a day and its coming from the pan, i know this because almost all the oil pan bolts were loose, that i could get to. so i was wondering if anyone thinks this would work. im going to try and loosen all the pan bolts but not drop it completly then just try an get some RTV around the whole pan then tighten it back up. worth a shot i geuss at least from the nightmare stories ive heard.

It may work, you'll never know til you try. You will have to make sure to clean any oil from the pan so the rtv will stick.

Let us know if it works.

Don't half-ass it.

Use a lot of rags and carb cleaner to get the oil off the metal mating surfaces after you have scraped the old gasket off.

RTV won't cut it.

Get a new gasket, cut it once at a 45* angle between two close bolt holes, and use gasket sealer or Form-a-gasket on all the surfaces. Use light coats. (By all the surfaces, I mean the bottom of the block, the pan itself and both sides of the gasket). Put the gasket on the bottom of the block and it'll stay in place while you put the pan back up and bolt it. Might want to let the Form-a-gasket set up a while so it's "tacky".

Lightly tighten the bolts and use red loc-tite on the first couple bolt threads. Use 1/4 drive ratchet and don't overtorque them (it'll leak). If you aren't going to torque them with a torque wrench, I suggest you get them all finger tight using a socket and extension (get them as tight as your fingers can) then add 1/6 to 1/3 turn from that point with the ratchet or wrench. Trust me, tighter is not better. You want snug without deforming the pan.

Yes, I realize what a PITA it'll be to do it this way and it'll probably take you a couple hours.

I pull my engine out of my '83 2.8 and bought a gasket kit and installed every part but the head gaskets. It includes all the valve stem seals, front and rear main seals, o-rings and gaskets. I think it would really suck to try and change the pan gasket w/o pulling the engine. Maybe I'm just a wimp that-a-way.

Yea i looked up some stuff, and a full gasket set is like 96 bucks and like you said it comes with everything and i think rings are about 43$ so i might just get all that then give er a rebuild.... but most likely not until schools out in a few weeks here.

In California we have a chain auto parts called Auto Zone. I bought my gasket kit there for $67.00. Mine had 315,000 mi, on it and I did not rebuild it while I had it out. I want to see how far it will go before it starts using oil.
