Just bought a 83 diesel just had a couple of questions...
The glowplug module is bad so it has the push button.. the previous owner told
Me to push it quickly3 times and not to hold it but it seems to have hard time with cold starts.. and the oil pressure gauge reads 3/4 of the way but still in the normal range, do those Perkins has high oil pressure?

hold the button in for only 3 seconds at a time. wait 60-90 seconds before using the glow plugs again. as full battery voltage will burn them out.

the glow plug system, when working. feeds full battery voltage to the glow plugs for three seconds, then a reduced voltage of 7-8 volts until the engine gets to 160'f. or 7 mph. the reduced voltage is created with the current going through a intake manifold heater and a fuel line heater, prior to the glow plugs.
some vehicles were equipped with a clutch switch that when the clutch is depressed would supply voltage to the glow plugs, until the engine reached 160'f

the system uses two solenoids one mounted on the firewall above the engine, the other solenoid is located above the starter.
a 160'f coolant temp sensor is located on the head near the front on the intake manifold side. near the engine temp sender for the dash gauges..

yes, they have great oil pressure. expect the engine to last over 750,000 miles with proper maintenance and use.

Hey guys, it has been a while since I logged on here but thought I'd bring up a discussion on the diesel. I'm finally running my '83 Diesel without water loss after installing a replacement head. Hooray. But the power level is still dangerously low on the hills here in Oregon. I stumbled upon Badgerland performance in Wisconsin and talked to Dave about a propane injection system. Tempforce, etc..what do you think? It is a good idea?

Thanks!

56 hp won't get you anywhere fast... i wouldn't go crazy with any modifications. but give it a try, if you can afford to repair your engine if something happens. many have done mod's, including myself. just keep in mind, you are your own warranty.
i should mention, that i was used to being passed by loaded trucks on the climbs over the coast ranges, the southern oregon passes and up the cascades... i even ventured a climb over California's grapevine with a load. i was getting lots of dirty looks, as i was belching coal all the way up... in the far right truck lane... i.e.: the safety lane...

My credo
it is easier to fix and understand than "her"

the beck arnley style plugs should take 10 seconds of voltage no problem manually. they are expensive little guys though...like 30 bux vs the ones in my truck with self limiters for less then 10 bux. i never compared them to the 60 g...if the thread is the same with similar depth set, buy some 60 g plugs and change the ends to that style with a manual controller.

do you have a turbo on it? provided you have a turbo and a good egt and maybe consider an intake air temp gauge as well... the propane could really make the truck actually drivable.

if it is naturally aspirated still.....you may kill it with propane...
on a good day they are turds. if you gave me one i might hook it to a generator head or something....maybe a lawn mower.... i would never use it in a truck.
