Ford part numbers can be difficult to understand. A part number like, F3TZ-6D008-A, really doesnt give a lot to go on. When you understand what the basic meaning is though it gets easier.
The first set of numbers (prefix) in this part number are F3TZ
The first letter corresponds to the decade: C=1960, D=1970, E=1980, etc.
The number following that corresponds to the year: C8=1968, D9=1979, etc.
The third spot is what the part is made for and is based on the VIN: T=truck and Z=mustang.
The final spot is the "design engineering office".
The second set of numbers in our part are 6D008
This middle set is a base number: 6000 is short block engine, 6001 is long block, 7001 is transmission.
The last letter following these is A.
The last place are always one or two letters and denotes a revision.
This is a chart that can be found online about Ford Part numbers. Please note that the chart is mainly about 60s and 70s Fords but according to the website it generally applies to later years too.
