somewhere during the lifetime of my ranger, the tag on the inside of the door that has the axle info, tire pressure, ect. has been peeled off. Is there any other way besides pulling the differential cover off to find out the gear ratio and/or rear end type? Its a '93 4.0 Supercab 4x4

There should be a metal tag bolted to one of the differential cover bolts with the info on it.

It will say like 3L410 or something of the sorts. Get the info and post it up here.

I forgot to mention that the tag was so rusted that i couldn't read anything. It basically just fell apart when i tried to read it. Just one of the many problems of living in the rust belt.. is there any way to tell what it is from the VIN number?

Not sure about the vin. Why don't you just peel the cover off and check the numbers stamped on the ring gear? Or worst case, you can count the teeth and figure it out.

mark a tire and the driveshaft and turn the ds and it will give you a rough idea so if you turn the drive shaft 3 and 3/4 you would have 3.73 or 3 and 1/2 would be 3.45 and so on

there should also be a sticker on the inside of pass side ttb arm, it will tell u the gear ratio... or do what baddis said, and that will also tell u if u have a l/s rear (if both tires spin the same direction its l/s, opposite = open)..

heres 7.5 vs 8.8

Yes, and your freindly Ford Part dealer should check that for you easily

Sounds like the perfect time to put fresh lube in the rear end. Pull the cover drain the old lube and at the same time you can check the type of rear and the ratio.
