Chevy V8 into Ford Options
Group: Members Posts: 6 Joined: 20-July 07 Member No.: 26,518 Vehicle Make: Ford Vehicle Model: Ranger Xtd Cab Gender: Male Vehicle Year: 2000 2WD or 4WD: 2WD Occupation: Retired Engineer Hi... I know this is really crazy, but I have built and worked on Chevy Small Block V8's over the years and was wondering if anyone knows if it is possible or has installed a Chevy Small Block into a Ranger??? I have been debating whether to install a Ford 302, a Chevy 350 or just keep my 3.0L and Turbo Charge, but I am not sure which would give the most bang for the bucks and also be the least headache for me. I will appreciate any help that anyone can give on this... thanks... Dave (IMG:style_emoticons/default/grin.gif) Well it is possible to install a Chevy small block, but putting in a Ford 302 is little easier because it's already been done, there's lots of information on how to do it, and there are kits and adaptors already out there to put one in. Plus, by putting in a Ford engine, you won't get crap about your swap from all us Ford-lover-and-Chevy-haters (including myself (IMG:style_emoticons/default/grin.gif) ) Honestly, just the idea of putting a Chevy engine in a Ford makes me cringe, but that's just me. It's your truck, so do whatever you want. I know chvlfrk put a 350 in his Ranger, so might wanna talk to him. As for your 3.0, there is a supercharger kit for it, but it was recently discontinued. You can still probably find used ones on eBay though. Good luck! Full Edit Quick Edit almostclueless Jul 20 2007, 11:22 AM Post #3 Too much time on my hands... Designer Dave, Tried replying early on this but site is really having problems. Since you have a 2000 model, easiest swap is to use the Explorer 5.0 and wiring harness/computer. Lots of talk about the swap, do a search for it Another Dave - soon to be retired mech. designer Full Edit Quick Edit chvlfrk Jul 20 2007, 11:16 PM Post #8 Been here a while Group: Members Posts: 252 Joined: 10-April 05 From: Niota, TN Member No.: 9,179 Vehicle Make: Ford Vehicle Model: Ranger Gender: Male Vehicle Year: 1994 2WD or 4WD: 2WD QUOTE(David52548 @ Jul 20 2007, 05:44 PM) OK... Designer Dave, The important thing on the swap is that you have the later model that relies way too much on the computers, unlike the earlier years where the cheby would be a lot easier. Not kits or adapters needed other than the need to fabricate motor mounts. If you have the torsion bar front suspension (rather than the normal coils) even the Explorer motor mount would work. Wiring plugs right in, no clearance problems, too many other reasons not to use the Explorer motor. Do you have to meet emissions regulations? Auto or manual? I think your recomendation of using the Explorer 5.0 is the better way to go. Unfortunately I have the coil springs in the front rather than the torsion bar suspension. I will have to look for a kit to help with the mounts and exhaust if such an animal is made. Your idea of using the harness and computer is also sound... I have to meet emissions and since you mentioned that point I may have to look a bit more carefully at what I would like to do... don't want to build this thing and then be told it is off road only and can not get it past inspection. Thanks for all of your input... it is excellent and I have appreciated it. You may have helped me avert a possible disaester... Designer Dave, The Explorer exhaust manifold/headers are a bolt in with no problem, just be sure not to use the tube style but get the cast iron ones or the ones sold by Ford. There are no kits for the motor mounts for the 2x4, have to be fabricated. The other Dave Full Edit Quick Edit Soylent_Green_Machine Jul 21 2007, 04:53 PM Post #13 I like this place...... I've see wrecked 90's 3/4 and 1 ton 460 fords in junk yards so you could even build a fuel injected motor with a factory harness. Granted, you'd have to modify your inner fenders, move your radiator to the bed, and stiffen the suspension, bu I think it would be awesome. When I get my big old truck finished, I'm gonna look for a newer std cab short box ranger and squeeze a 460 into it. Though, I'm not gonna bother with fuel injection, probably carb and HEI. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() your rangers a ford, so keep it ford. an earlier 302 (carbed) is just as easy as any chevy swap, and, if you want to keep it EFI, the explorer 5.0 is damn near plug and play. |
