Default "loose" shift cable

having an issue going into reverse and drive on my 95 ranger 4x4 with 4r44e trans. it seems there is play between the shifter and shift arm on the trans. i disconnected it at the trans and can pull it back and forth about an inch. any ideas on where to look?

got it fixed. dropped the column tonight and found the bushings for the shift shaft were pushed out. one round of electrical tape cured the looseness....all working good now.
