I have a 93 ranger with an old alpine head unit cde 7831 and it has been acting stupid for a while now well the other day it just up and quit i pulled the face plate off and noticed that the little blinking light wasn't blinking so i thought maybe the fuse under the driver side blew. checked that and it was fine so i think either the radio is just dead or the fuse behind the player is blown either way i want to replace it because it didn't like playing cdr's at all. but i'm not the original owner of the cd player so i have no idea if the stock wiring harness is intact so i'm thinking about just replacing it with a new alpine, but i went to their site to get some info on the old one versus the new one for things such as the connecter on the cd player.. if anyone knows if my old one would be compatible with a new one i would greatly appreciate it. and one more thing should I disconnect the negative battery cable or pull the fuse to the radio before i start working on it...thanks alot guys and sorry for all the info but i didn't want to leave anything out...

I don't know much about alpine. The best way to know is to take the deck out and take it to a stereo shop or a store that sells alpine and pull the plup off of a new unit and see if your radio has the same plug on it. You will also see if they used aftermarket radio connectors or hard wired it in. You do not have to unhook the battery or take the fuse out to pull the radio.
