My starter is really loud when I start my truck, and I read that I should change my 9 tooth pinion to a 10 tooth pinion. Well I went to Advanced Auto this morning and no luck there. I've been looking on the internet for three hours and still no luck. But I have seen some Permanent Magnet Gear Reduction (PMGR) starters. So Now I have a couple of questions.

1) Has any one bought a 10 tooth pinion for their starter? If so, do you have a part number of it?

2) Would one of these newer PMGR starters work on my truck? And which one?

My 1983 Ranger has a 2.8L V6 from a 1984 Ranger. My 83 used to have a 2.3L 4banger with a 4 speed manual transmission. It still has the manual transmission, I just changed the engines.

I have shopped for a PMGR starter for a 2.8L motor, but can't find one. I've found some for the 2.0L, 2.3L, 2.5L, 2.9L, 3.0L, and the 4.0L engines.

I would rather just change the gears and keep the same starter in my truck.

Thank you for any help.

Or could I order a gear for the PMGR starter and install it (the gear) on my old Mod II starter?

Check your flywheel for any signs of trouble. Maybe a shim will help it? If it is a starter I would just buy a new one and be done with it. I have never had a starter go out on me before on any cars or trucks.

The starter if fine. It's just loud when I start the truck. I read where after a while, the starter might go out on me because of the gears having 9 teeth instead of 10.

I was thinking it'd kind of suck if I were out some place, and the starter goes out on me. I was just thinking of preventive maintenance.

IF you want a Permenant Magnet, Gear Reduction starter for a 2.8 the one you must use is the one for a 4.0 with an automatic transmission

The one for a 4.0 with a manual trans is different (the flywheel ring gear is closer to the
engine block on a 4.0 manual flywheel)

Thank you, I wasn't sure which one, IF I had to buy one. :icon_thumby:

if your starter is grinding on start up, your holding the key too long after it fires.

I had one go out on me just today.

I pulled one in to replace the rad and somewhere between start and finish the starter decided it wanted to die.

Any good rebuilder should be able to swap your bendix out for the one you need for minimal cost

Yup, thank you. The closest guy I found is in Orwell, Vt. I'm in Ticonderoga. I'll be going over there next week.

Thanks again!
