I am in the middle of a radiator change in my first gen Ex and was wandering, should I stick with the stock fan or put in big OE style electric fan? I tow and drive in high heat (100 plus degrees) and in the mountains. I don't what to take a step backwards as far as cooling performance. Anyone have any thoughts?

Thanks
Jonathan

I'd keep the stock fan and also add an electric one with a temp controlled switch. Dunno what you've got for a transmission but I'd definitely think about getting a large tranny cooler with its own fan if you've got an automatic.

So the stock external trans cooler isn't enough?

Thanks

There are a lot of factors that need to be taken into consideration. A4LD transmissions are not exactly the strongest to begin with so you ideally want to do whatever you can to keep them cool. The stock cooler in my Bronco II was just a single tube and the overall size of the cooler was about 3"x10". I upgraded to one that is about 10"x12" so I have a lot more surface area cooling the fluid.

So to answer your question, I don't have any data to say that what you have is good enough or not - I just think it's impossible to use too many cooling devices with an automatic, especially when towing.
