This is to help anyone trying to complete the drive cycle for their 1996. A "Ford Technician" said there was no such thing as a cycle bypass. I was having problems finding the exact I/M test cycles to complete these parameters in order to pass a smog test. It takes 300 to 400 miles of city/highway driving in order to complete these cycles. I found this in the owners manual. I went to www.motorcraftservice.com in order to download the owners manual for my year ranger. Heres the OBDII drive cycle:

OBD II Drive Cycle
The following steps must be run in the order shown. If any
steps are interrupted, repeat the preceding step. Any safe
driving mode is acceptable between steps.
Always drive vehicle in safe manner according to traffic
conditions and obey all traffic laws.
The engine must be warmed up and at operating temperature
before proceeding with the drive modes of the following OBD II
Drive Cycle.
1. Start the engine. Drive or idle (in neutral) the vehicle for 4
minutes.
2. Idle the vehicle in drive (neutral for automatic transmissions)
for 40 seconds.
3. Accelerate the vehicle to 45 mph (72 km/h) (for manual
transmissions upshift from 1st to 5th gear, but hold in 2nd
for at least 5 seconds) at 1/4 to 1/2 throttle for 10 seconds.
4. Drive the vehicle with a steady throttle at 45 mph
(72 km/h) (manual transmissions use 5th gear) for 30
seconds.
5. Idle the vehicle in drive (neutral for manual transmissions)
for 40 seconds.

6. Continue to drive the vehicle in city traffic at speeds
between 25 and 40 mph (40-64 km/h) (manual transmissions
primarily drive vehicles in 3rd and 4th gear when possible)
for 15 minutes. During the 15 minute drive cycle the
following modes must be achieved:
a. at least 5 stop and idle modes at 10 seconds each.
b. acceleration from idles at 1/4 to 1/2 throttle position, and
c. choose three different speeds to do 1.5 minute steady state
throttle drives.
7. Accelerate the vehicle up to between 45 and 60 mph
(72-97 km/h) (manual transmissions upshift to 5th gear).
This should take approximately 8 seconds.
8. Drive vehicle and hold the throttle steady at the selected
speed between 45 and 60 mph (72-97 km/h) (manual
transmissions use 5th gear) for approximately 5 minutes.
9. Drive the vehicle for 5 minutes at varying speeds between 45
and 60 mph (72-97 km/h) (manual transmissions use 5th
gear).
10. Bring the vehicle back to idle. Idle in drive (manual
transmissions use 5th gear) for 40 seconds.
11. OBD II drive cycle has been completed. Vehicle can be
turned off when convenient.

I hope this helps someone. It was a pain in the ass getting answers for this. I know its probably somewhere on these forums but all i found was a general ford drive cycle.

Probably not, he listed for OBDII and I believe thats 96 and newer. Oh and for my own info what is all this used for? Is it just for smog testing?

I went to http://www.motorcraftservice.com/vdirs/SPubs/default.asp?TYPE=OWNERGUIDE&pageid=oghome&gutsid=spubs_serv_all_new&MARKET_LANG=US-EN&YEAR=2011&VEHICLE=Ranger

I found the drive cycle for the 1996 Ranger in the owner manual section.
I looked and doesn't have any info available on 1995 rangers.

@fourwheelford. This is for mechanics to bypass the drive cycles in order to complete the sensors so you can pass a smog test. Otherwise, it takes a lot of driving and about 3 to 4 weeks of various different driving speeds and situations. It could help in other ways but this is what I needed the drive cycle bypass for

Unburying this thread so as to keep this information all in one place.

In preparing to perform this drive cycle test on my truck (it is not engine specific), I can't help but think how difficult it will be do perform these steps in this exact order while I'm stuck in the middle of a major metropolitan area (too much traffic congestion and too many stop lights). So I'm trying to figure out what "any safe driving mode is acceptable between steps" means.

Also wanted to provide an updated link to the 1996 Ranger owner's manual: http://www.fordservicecontent.com/Ford_Content/catalog/owner_guides/96ranog1e.pdf (you can find it by searching google for "96ranog1e.pdf").

UPDATE:

As it turns out, the drive cycle isn't nearly as picky as I had expected it to be. I generally followed it (and am certain some of the steps were interrupted more than once). Ended up driving about 30 miles before verifying that all of the monitors were ready to go for an emissions inspection.

I'd like to thank you for posting this info. This allowed me to finally reset my monitors after I did my manifold gaskets on my 2.3 l 96 Ranger...what a PITA. I NEVER drive like this process dictates.
