The engine in the red '88 4x4 turned out to be lame. We found a donor, pulled the engine and pressure washed it, then my son sealed it up with new gaskets & detailed it with engine enamel. Judging by the warranty tags glued on the freeze plugs & the lack of any sludge or carbon indicates that it's probably been remanufactured. Previous owner said it had about 28,000 miles when he got it a couple of years back and he kept all maintenance records since he owned it.
We dropped it in with new flywheel & complete clutch kit, reworked all the wire looms and as a bonus got a really nice dash pad from the donor truck, along with a ton of other good parts. This is our second father/son Ranger project (both 1st Gens) which is priceless in itself. The 2.9 gets a bad rap in general, but after five years of wrenching on them, we've finally made one shine.
