Has anyone ever fixed the notorious 4.0 tick when cold problem?

I mean, was it lifters, pushrods, both?

Lifters can cause it. Push rods can cause it. Bad rocker arms can cause it. Bad valve stems can cause it. Broken valve springs can cause it. Plugged rocker shaft oil passages can cause it. Bad cam lobe can cause it.

In other words just about anything in the top of the engine can cause it. Lifters and push rods seem to be a common problem. Push rods are easy, lifters are not.

I'm changing the pushrods and rockers as we speak, not positive if this is the problem but the rockers are dimpled and the pushrods are kind of mushroomed, some worse than others, I'll keep you posted

Well it ticked for a shorter time then got real quiet, quieter than it's ever been, I'm going to let it cool down and start it up again to see if the tick is still there, but I'm guessing I have a a sticky lifter also, I could really pin point the tick this time, either way, it needed the pushrods and rockers

The 4.0 is notorious for wearing the ends of the pushrods, you most likely fixed it w rockers and pushrods for now. How is your oil pressure? that is usually the core issue.

Well the plot thickens, it lasted about two and a half weeks, now it's back, but it goes away much quicker and it's not as loud, and it really seems like it's on one side now, my rockers were really pitted and pushrods were toast, I need to hook up a real pressure gauge, but I did put in a new oil pump when I did my swap a few years ago,

I'm wondering if some dirt got back up to the rocker arm rod and plug one of the holes again, there was some crap in them when I changed to rockers

Personally I would do a quart of engine flush and let it run as recommended to hopefully get the lifters working better.

No guarantees

I have a 200k motor and got the tic after having the oil changed at one of the lube places. Changed oil myself and took out the small Fram cheep unit - went to the larger, more expensive Motorcraft and it went away.
