I have a M50D-R1 trans from a 88 with a 2.9 and one from a 88 with a 2.0. My question is will the internals from one fit the other. The one in the 2.9 will not stay in reverse even if I try to hold it in and it will not go into fifth, which I understand is a common problem. The 2.0 one is perfect so I want to swap some internal parts and wasn't sure they were the same internally.

If they are both actually M5ODs...then yes they will interchange. If they are both 2wd or both 4x4 its easy as swapping it all over and reshimming it. If you are going 4x4 to 2wd you will need to slide all the gears/bearings off the tail shafts and swap.

To my knowledge they never made a 2.0 with an M5OD..I actually don't thing the M5OD existed in 88 either.

Do you have pictures?

1988 was the first year for the M5OD-R1

and the only manual for 4cyl engines from 1988-up

If it won't go into 5th and pops out of reverse someone messed with the 5th-rev bellcrank pivot adjustment (The big torx nut on the side of the transmission) or potentially installed mismatched 5th/rev syncro pieces from a later trans

Thanks for the info guys, they are both 2WD so it should all be good. Did not know about the bellcrank adjustment so I will be investigating that first. Again thanks for the info
