So the Ranger IV had a good run. I learned a lot but it finally was put down. It has been disassembled and scarped.

So shortly after a buddy offered me his YJ project. It wasnt the 4 seater Explorer I wanted, but the price was right and I couldnt say no.

My goal is a V8 powered wheeler than can handle the road and fit my family (4 seater)

So here I dragged home this started YJ project. I am currently the 3rd person attempting it.

Specs how I got it:
Blasted and painted frame
Rear 4 link
Leaf sprung front
Rebuilt (but left outside un-sealed) Chevy 350 (carb with propane injection)
SM465 with hydro bell housing
NP205
Chevy D60 (4.10 open)
14 bolt rear (4.10 open)
Military 37s
Gutted tub
Lots of boxes of parts including a rock ram, 14bolt rear disk conversion and some other Jeep/Chevy stuff that I havnt figured out yet.

Pics of the rescue

After I had it at home for a month I dug into it

My old Ranger didnt have any gearing. It just spun my tires a lot and had fun. This time around, I want some gearing. The crawl on my Ranger was 48:1. I would like around 75-80:1 this time around. With the current GM setup, I was looking at 53:1 with 4.10s and 65:1 with 5.13s. 65:1 is not horrible, but with out an OD trans, highway cruising is out of the question. I could do a Dana300 with a 4:1 LR to get more gearing if wanted. However, the GM setup is passenger drop. I am not a fan of the low pinion GM D60 either. Since I am not familiar with GM configurations, I decided to go back to Ford. I am thinking an EFI 302 mated to a ZF5 and BW1356. That is what I had planned for an Explorer build.
A 302/ZF5/1356 and 5.13s will yield a 79:1 crawl and I will still be able to run 65 mph with our screaming.

Chart I made

So the hunt for Ford stuff began. Shortly after, a friend traded me my propane setup for a good SBF 4wd ZF5 (with FW and clutch). Then another friend bought a F350 for parts. So I acquired a 1356 from him. He also included a NP435 and NP205 for fun. So now I need an EFI 302. I was looking for a 2wd F150 with a ZF5. A buddy could use the ZF5 hence the 2wd 5 speed part.

ZF5

Then a buddy called asking if I knew anyone that had a ZF PTO cover plate laying around. He wanted to trade a cover for a PTO he had on a truck he wanted to flip. So now I have a PTO. No idea what I am going to do with it, but I wanted it. So this project is off to a GREAT start so far. I am excited.

I picked up a 302 donor yesterday. A 1984, one owner, Lincoln Continental. Its not multi-port EFI, but the TBI will work for now.
It was a friends grandpa's car. I traded some steel and the SM465 for it. I also gave him a wasted 80s Ford cab that I didn't have a title for. That made my wife happy. He scraps more than me and can pull it off.

Borrowed a scrapper trailer, loaded the junk up and drove 60 miles. Somehow this trailer made the 120 mile trip.

Made it home

The car runs, drives and stops well. The bottom is pretty rusted out. I just want the engine and then I will scrap it.
So once I got it home and bajaed around the yard I took a better look at it. Turns out it has a full air ride setup and hydro-boost. BOTH surprises to me. WIN. So now I have a TBI 302 (106k miles), bad ass braking system (MAYBE, not sure how it will work with tons) and on board air. :D

The next thing I need to do is buy some fab tools. The past rig was built using borrowed welders, torches and benders. I want to buy a hot wrench, nice 220 welder and a bender before I start this build. We will see what happens. A 2 post lift would be nice.
I fund this hobby by flipping cars. So far is not going so well. So time will tell.

Sounds like you are off to a good start. That ZF flywheel you got has to be from a 302 to work on the lincoln motor. A 351 & 300 will bolt up but have the wrong balance.

The Lincoln seats look like they would be a good fit for the jeep. Wheel in style and comfort lmao.

Hobart Handler 190 was on sale at my local Tractor Supply for $650 last week. I don't think I've ever seen it lower than that. It is a 220V.

That is good to know! I am pretty sure this came out of a 90s F250 with a 351.

You actually need one from a 302 in a truck. A mustang uses a smaller diameter ring gear and the starter wont work with a truck transmission. The truck flywheel has to come from a 82-97 If I remember right. They changed the balance of the crank in the early 80s.

I have a Miller, It works great.

Small update if you want to call it that. Been traveling most of this summer. Finally sold my axles last weekend. He got a deal. Ended up giving him everything. Arms, brackets and anything else 1/2ton related I had lying around. So tons it is.

I still dont know how I ended up with 2 Jeeps...

So I started bender shopping. I was lined up to buy a setup from a member on here when a buddy called me. Someone he knew needed money. He picked up a JD Model 4, stand, hyrdo setup, 2 dies (1.5 and 1.75) and a JD notcher (The Beast) for a really good price. The issue is that he doesnt have a place to store it. So I volunteered. I look forward to trying it out.
