Ok so I have an 02 / 3.0 / manual trans. Started misfiring on cylinder 5 recently.

As the problem progressed, I noticed the speedometers bouncing up to maximum speed and the odometer whirring by. This was accompanied with an engine code that said I was going too fast/ revving too high.

After playing with the coil, plugs, wires, I had an epiphany. If I was "going 120", the speed limited would be kicking in. Unplugged the speed sensor in the trans, my problems evaporated. Apparently, when the speed limiter kicks in doing 30mph, it makes the truck run Rough!

My credo
In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they are different.
I guess that kinda makes sense even though I don't know exactly how the speed limiter limits speed.

Speed limiter on a 3.0L Ranger? That's like telling a turtle "Hey! Stop running!"

Replace your speed sensor. IIRC 02 was one of the years that had one (1998-99 IIRC did not).

Laugh all you want, but I have hit the limiter in my ranger, IIRC it was 105mph.

The speed limiter kills the injectors, FYI.

RD - my '04's governor hits at 90, cuts fuel injectors until 89.5 mph
