well im getting tired of my a4ld not doing the right thing so i come to the conclusion that its time to swap it out for a manual trans. ive been looking in my area for different transmissions to swap in, and ive found a fm145/manual tcase, and a fm146 without t-case. im wondering which would be the easiest to swap in place of my a4ld? will i have to get the donor cars crossmember or can i use the one i have now(bushingless, mounts to the frame)? also which would be the better one to use so i dont have to change out my driveshafts?

the fm145 is closer to me and its cheaper, even though it includes the transfer case

any opinoins on which one to get? i seem to have found everything else i need for the swap

well i just found one from a b2 for 500 and its right down the road, im trying to go the cheapest route as i only have about 700 im willing to drop on it at this time, but one of the fm146's i found i can get the clutch line, flywheel, m/c, and slave cyl for around 500, then another 50 for the pedal assembly

EDIT: hell i could get another a4ld for 350 and then id have money for other mods but im scared im going to run into the same problem, this is my dd and i have a baby on the way, wont b able to afford a new tranny every month after he gets here

if i remember right the fm145 came out of a '83-'87 and the fm146 came out of a '88-'91 and there is a difference, the 145 is a bit longer and the shifter is further back on the trans compared to the 146

You got that backwards evil. The 146 is longer, same length as the A4LD, and it's easier to switch to from the A4.

i knew one of them was longer, making the cross member mounts different, and the axles different length

I think you mean drive shafts.

A4LD to 146 shouldn't be a problem.
