The back of the cluster has 2 14 pin plug ins that has only 1 pin not wired. This 1 is labeled v8. does this need to be grounded or does some other wire need moved?

On the later clusters, the 4 cyl had no ground, the V6 was grounded and on the V8, the V6 ground was left open and the different ground applied. I'd expect your earlier cluster might well be the same.

What engine was originally in your Ranger? If a 4 cyl, I'd simply try grounding that pin you've ID'd. If a 6, you might need to do some web crawling to ID the ground for the V6 and move to the V8 slot.
