2001 2.5L Ranger just replaced the timing belt, water pump and tensioner. I am almost positive the marks were accurate before completed the installation; was kind of hard to tell with no real way to check TDC with cover being off. Tried to use the mark on gear, and the v groove in the block along with the Keyway facing upward. Diamond to diamond on far right pulley, and Triangle to triangle on cam (Turned the engine over by hand twice to double check the mark alignment). When I started it tonight she ticked a little, as if it had a doughnut gasket leak. Then it had subsided after warmed up. Put the truck in gear and the idle dropped off like it wanted to die. Well below 500RPM Put back in park idled back up close to 700RPM runs smooth. I tried putting her back in gear tried to die. In park I revved her up a little and did not like the response I was getting. Could I be just one tooth off on the cam to cause this, would you recommend I take the cover off and try to reset the belt again? What other things could this be? I was also thinking maybe the timing is not compensating and it may need to be adjusted (I am guessing this can only be done by a service tech with a computer). Any suggestions would be appreciated.
