Ok guys, I used the search bar and basically what im finding is that 5.0 swap is pretty much not possible and still pass inspection in texas. So can someone confirm or deny that.

Can i still swap for a 4.0 if i find one around that year?

2006 2wd 3.0 ext cab.

If you can find a 4.0 ranger of the same year or newer. You're golden.

Welcome to TRS :)

I believe an engine swap needs the newer motor to BE a newer motor so in your case 2006 or newer motor.

And while you could do a 4.0l swap into 3.0l Ranger it would not be a great swap to do since you can just go out and buy a 4.0l stock Ranger, which as said above, you would need to do anyway.

If your 3.0l engine is bad then either replace it/fix it and sell it to buy a 4.0l Ranger, or sell it "as is" mechanics special and buy a 4.0l Ranger

To swap in a 4.0l into a 3.0l Ranger you need the 4.0l engine and 2WD TRANSMISSION, 3.0l trans won't work with 4.0l
You also need the 4.0l's computer and complete engine wiring harness, and trans harness if automatic.

So basically the same work and cost as V8 swap but no real valve added since you could go out and buy a stock 4.0l 2WD Ranger for probably less cost in time and money and you would know it would pass inspection.
Even if you follow all the rules for engine swapping in Texas, there is no guarantee it will pass inspection the 1st time

Just curious why is it that has to be 2006 and up what is it that makes it unable to pass inspection?

Most states will require the donor engine be of the same year or newer in order to comply with federal regulations and emissions.

Some states get even trickier. They want it from the same type of vehicle. (If you have a ranger. Engine has to come from a ranger. If you have an explorer. It has to come from an explorer and so on)

So just to make sure I understand if I were to find a 4.0 06 or newer I should be ok as long as I have the engines wiring harness as well? Does that mean that any 4.0 2 wheel drive automatic tranny will work? Or does it have to be the same year and up as well?

Transmission won't matter. Dot doesn't care about that. Just the engine.

Your best bet would be to find a 06 ranger and take the whole drivetrain and harness out.

So, I probably should have done tgis research before hand but i just went to texss department of transportation and found this regarding engine swap.

FAQs: Items of Inspection - Engines Swaps

Engine Swaps

Rules regulating engine swapping are not make/model specific. The simple rule is that a vehicle must have all emissions components that were present when it was manufactured, which may include:

PCV - positive crankcase ventilation
ACL - air cleaner (thermostatic air cleaner)
AIS - secondary air injection
EGR - exhaust gas recirculation
EVAP - evaporative emission
CAT - catalytic convertor
SPK - spark control
FR - fillpipe restrictor
O2S - oxygen sensor

Im slightly slow so bare with me, but this sounds like it is possible for a 5.0 swap right?

Biggest issue you're going to run into. Is trying to get your computer, which is an 06. To play nice with a 5.0, which they stopped making in 99. I'll wait for someone else to chime in.
