it is easier to fix and understand than "her"
the older style fast before this new stuff requires a bit of work and tuning.


the self tuner....work pretty good. if your happy with a carb you will be happy with those. i have installed both, though not recently in rangers.

you may consider putting it on the dyno to help diagnose the bog with the 4bbl. may need a bit of a timing adjustment or maybe move the cam around a little with a rollmaster if you dont have one installed already. the 347 make quite a bit of torque compared to a reg 302 down low, but seriously a stroker 351 is ideal for your use. i run heavily loaded as well in the general and a reg mild build 302 with efi was always working pretty hard. the 351 is a different beast all around for work.

of course your trans and split shifting are harder to match with a carb as well. those old creeper transmissions were made for low rpm nutless no power pussy engines. if you like a 435 or t18/19 trans in stock form on the street...your engine is a bitch. at least with overdrive splitting you can actually use your engine.

so the efi might not impress you as much. i know i would prefer the efi regardless. you dont get as crazy as some of us so the 4 bbl is quite usable and hard to justify the cost of the efi upgrade. but it will be a upgrade. i can not see any performance lost at all....simply maintained or gained in every area.

Some how I recently got an 5.0 HO efi setup for $175 off a 93 mustang. I didn't think it was possible to find it so cheap. It came off another guys ranger then her went carbed. I'm only a few pieces away from doing the swap (and decent weather).

Thanks Bobby the bog has been sorted. Too much vacuum advance. Your post make a lot of sense to me.

I did install a 31-452-8 Comp Cam when building the engine. Think it is a bit to wild for my application. Considering a swap to a 35 421-8 Comp Cam to gain a little low down torque.

Can you please comment on this.

without driving your truck its tough to say....i looked up the cam cards and that cam is a bit lacking for low end tq, but workable.

that is why i wondered if you had a rollmaster timing set. its a pain in the ass to adjust it but can be quite a valuable option.

of course that ass-u-mes you fully deg-reed your cam when you built the engine and know precisely where the valve events are at, and what they are in relation to the cam cards.


the cam you have reminds me of the voodoo cams that worked pretty good on carb cars here....mostly mustangs with strokers.

but honestly, run your engine combo past a local builder there and the comp cams tech guys and see where they go.


they have some real good 4x4 cams, but your gonna take a hit on top end power using those for sure.


the cam you are considering looks much better directly compared. but i dont even know where the cam is set that you are running now....if its advanced or retarded a few degrees....even square on duration...it could be much better and right where you want to be.

gonna have to make some calls or shoot some e mails out to the cam guys..

While on the subject of the 347, I will finish off its build. My goal was to reach 400hp and around 400 ft/lbs. Power and torque needed to turn those 35`s I planned to install.

Here is the tech list of the 347`s vitals.
1. AFR 142 72cc heads.
2. Comp roller cam
3. Crane roller rockers
4. Weiand Street Warrior intake
5. Holley 670 Truck Avenger
6. Mallory dissy
7. Edelbrock high flow water pump.
8. Professional Products stainless bolt kid.


i would consider the truck cam after reviewing this.

I notice how your vehicle has been modified alot vs the rest look like they are factory with a few bolt ons.
