Towed it home

Hi - new here and I have a doosy. 88 B2 w/ 2.9 manual

It sat for 6mths and was ran out of gas.
Supposedly the t/c was stuck in N.
The engine wont turn over so I towed it home.
Bought it for $250.

I found a small bit of gas at the fuel regulator but after tinkering with it and the fuel line it is now dry.
I dumped a couple gallons of gas in it, dumped the old oil and coolant.
Put fresh stuff in it and sprayed carb cleaner in.
It tries to start with the cleaner and Seafoam.

I checked the inertia switch - seems fine.
How to test the Fuel Relay? In simple simple terms please.

Any ideas on being ran out of gas?
Can you just cut out the inertia switch out and wire together?

Yeah, I'm not a fan of chopping up wires if it can be avoided. If you have a multi meter or a test light, they're your best friends if you know how to use them. Always check for power and continuity. 30 year old vehicles need TLC. Wires get old and corroded. Tech section is your friend, tons of info if you look.

Do you hear the fuel pump?
It should run for 2 seconds, 2 seconds only, when you turn on the key
Turn key off and on as much as you like to decide if you hear it or you don't

If you do hear it then fuel filter may be plugged up

If you don't hear it then in the engine bay on battery side you will see a GREEN base relay, that's the fuel pump relay
Pull it out of its green base, look at the connections
If they look OK use a volt meter or test light, key is OFF, test each slot in the base for 12volts, one should have 12volts, that fuel pump power from battery thru a Fuse, or Fusible Link
If no 12volts then you have a blown fuse

If you find 12volts then turn on the key
There should now be another slot showing 12 volts, that power for the relay
If no second 12volt slot then you will need to check out the BROWN based relay, it provides that 12volts

inertia switch rarely fails but is often blamed, lol

Battery------fuse(fusible link)--------FP relay------------inertia switch-----------------------fuel pump-------Ground

IIRC The 88 would have a low pressure in tank pump feeding a high pressure frame mounted pump. Just under the frame mounted pump is a large canister, that is the fuel filter. The filter and high pressure pump is hidden behind a metal plate mounted to the frame by 2 10mm bolts. There may also be a fuel accumalator before those two but I'm not sure on that, it might have been only on dual tank rangers. The connectors that are used are the "duckbill", use a flat screwdriver to pull them out. Make sure the fuel lines have no pressure by finding the schrader valve on the fuel rail. The schrader valve looks like a tire valve and is where you would hook up a fuel pressure gauge. Fuel pressure should be 40 psi. You can rent or borrow a fuel pressure gauge from parts stores. I would highly suggest getting one.

WOW Ok
What an eventful couple of days. Pulled the air box so I can fool around with the relays on the passenger side. The battery was getting weak so I swapped out the battery. Well hanging there was a small wire. I was like whats this for???
So I mashed it on the ground side and the truck fired up.
Crazy - so I redid the negative side and included that wire. Now it fires up no problem.

OFF to the T/C motor. It kicks on. I pulled it apart a little and found the bumper destroyed and removed it. Turned the outter cover about 1/8" clock wise to make up for the bumper. Cleaned off the circuit board and put back together.

I can get a very slight pulse or jerk when I put it in gear and let off the clutch. BUT no movement. hmmmm I might pull the t/c motor and try to manually switch to 2wd and test.

Also while I was under there I found this wire. It looks slightly beat up. Any idea what it goes to???
