Anybody know a good spray on cleaner that wont hurt engine internals? I have an engine thats been sitting for awhile and id like to clean the insides out without taking it apart. Also what would you use to lube the internals to prevent rust if it was going to be sitting for awhile?

I'm not sure about cleaning it, but I have seen this stuff called "engine fog" that is supposed to be for storing them. I don't know much about it, I've just seen it on the shelf at the store.

About the only thing I know to do to an engine that has been sitting for a long time is to change the oil, pull the plugs and dump some oil in each cylinder. Then with the plugs out, turn it over by hand a couple of times, then with the starter until you have oil pressure. FYI-When I change oil I fill the new filter with oil.

Put it back together and start it. It will smoke like mad until the oil you put in the cylinders burns out.

For storing I have heard of dumping light oil (something like mystery oil) into a running engine until it chokes out. No clue how that works.

Thanks for all the replies, i ended up just wiping down the insides with a dry cloth, then rubbed some clean oil. Im going to be getting an oil pan for it and a oil pump primer so i can flow oil through everything every now and then.

Maybe get a can of seafoam spray and soak everything good and let it drip off. It is flammable so let it gas off good before you seal it up.

kerosene works real good, with a wire brush it'll do wonders(not cylinder/bearing surfaces tho, but anyone ough know that)

fogging oil works good for storing them, i can usually find it at any marine supply shop, ive always used the mercury branded stuff, they also have a product called "power tune" which is seafoam on steroids that eats carbon out of a warmed up engine..
