I've searched through the forum and internet and have not seen mention of the type of sway bar I have on my 1st Gen. It is connected through a cross member.

It looks like I would simply remove all bolts attached to the cross member and the u-bolt that holds the sway bar D shaped bushing. After removal I would ditch the u-bolts and put in regular bolts to hold the lower shock mount. Does that sound correct?

Yep, should be as simple as that.
