now im not sure, but i think my clutch is not disengaging completely when i downshift to first gear, put in the clutch and come to a stop, i feel a thud and the vehicle lurches forward a little. then when i let off the brake with the clutch still in, the vehicle starts to creep forward.

any suggestions?
thanks

sounds like the throw out bearing might be going or the clutch is not releasing all the way.

Check the hydraulics. Got clutch fluid? Pedal feel kinda soft?

The pedal is supposed to have some free play and the clutches normally engage kind of high. Your fluid is probably ok, but check it anyway. DOT3 brake fluid.

Mine started to hang up and make noise when released, turns out the pilot bearing was starting to go out. Needed a clutch anyway, so it wasn't too terrible.

Release bearing? Not from the symptoms described.

I do agree on the hydraulics. A leak can explain this.

Other possibilities are a PILOT bearing or warped disk.

See if pumping the clutch helps. If it does AND the fluid is not low, change the master cylinder. Otherwise, pull the transmission and replace the slave and clutch.

I had the same symptoms and one of the bad parts was the release bearing. It certainly didnt help the situation but I do not believe it was the only part of the problem.
