From the table in the tech library it looks like the gearing for a MD05 from a 4.0 is slightly taller in the 1st 3 gears than a MD05 from all other engines. So here is the question, how big a difference will that make if I install a MD05 from a 4.0 into my 1989 BII that has a 2.9?

Table:
Mazda M50D-R1 M 1988 & Up 4-Cylinder Rangers
1988-1992 2.9L 2WD Rangers
1991-2000 4.0L Ranger
1991 - Up 3.0L Ranger
5-Speed 3.40 / 2.05 / 1.31 / 1.00 / 0.79 (4.0L Engines)
3.72 / 2.20 / 1.50 / 1.00 / 0.79 (All Other Engines)

Also is there any way to check a MD05 input bearing when it is out of the truck??

Thanks...

I dont know how to tell you the actual difference, or whether you would feel the difference or not. I know I would go with the other trans because of the lower (numerically higher) gearing they provide. Has to make a difference at some point, and I would rather have the advantage of lower gearing down where I would use it most.

I put an M5OD from a '94 ranger that had a 4.0L in my '87 Bronco 2, with a 2.9L. I used the 2.9 clutch, since I'm cheap. It takes a little getting used to, to get going from a stop, but once you get used to it, it's alright. Don't expect to win any races though.

If I was to do it over again, I'd at least use the 4.0L clutch, and possibly rebuild the M5OD with the different gearing.

What was the axle gearing in the BII though?

Looks like I go with the 4.0 clutch & all.

My BII has the stock gearing in the rear end..

I need to change it as the FM 146 is very noisey but still working. While I'm in there I will change the electric shift T-case to a manule T-case as it stopped working. Lots to do before winter...

My axle gearing is 3.42.

Looks like you're in the same spot I was last year. I still have the dead FM145 in the garage. My advice until you get it swapped: Stay out of 5th gear!

Your axle gearing is 3.45.

@ the OP.
I put a 4.0 trans and clutch in my 87 with the 2.9L. In first you don't notice it much, same with second. 3rd can be run longer if you are trying to get better accel, and I don't even bother shifting into 5th until I get to 55 and plan to stay there or above for a while. I used to make the 5th gear shift around 50.

Yeah, you're right. I typed it wrong on the number pad (2 right below the 5).
