I need a Ranger pick up and I want to stay away from the 'X' motor because I've heard that it just costs too much to replace. I know it's a V-6, but that's all I know. Does anyone have more info on this?
Also, I'm looking to get a used Ranger in the price range of 3-5K. Is there any engine you would recommend above all others? Thanks in advance! |

Although gutless and all your friends will laugh at you.. My favourite choice of engine for the Ranger will always be the 2.3L After almost 500,000 km on mine with no major problems (its still on the road, i just dont own it anymore) It will forever hold a place in the books with me
Plus over 20MPG you cant go wrong with that! Its really user preference on who is going to suggest what engine, I think it comes down to what do you want to use the truck for |

Mine is a 98 3.0 5 speed with 140k miles on it, know problems. It's not very strong, but strong enough to be comfortable cruising at 80 on the interstate and get around 21 mpg's pretty consistently. My dad just sold a 94 2.3 with 220k miles on it. Although slow, there is no doubt it is a solid engine. The 4.0 v6 I have never had any experience with. I do know it is a lot stronger though, but the fuel mileage is not as good.

I have a 2000 xlt 2.5l, manual. Got it for 4000. It's a great truck, and i love it. I haul stuff on trailer and in the bed all the time,(anything from 1000 to 2500 lbs) it does great for being a 4 banger! I got bigger tires and I still get around 20 mpg hauling stuff. My mom had an X motor and had it till the tranny went. It was a great engine.

the 4.0L is a fantastic engine, I have 228,000 miles on mine and the motor itself still has alot of life left in it! Strong for a V6, too. No complaints about mine what-so-ever and I've driven it for nearly a decade now.

The 4.0 OHV was a wonderful engine, the SOHC version was a hair more problematic, but it is not super prone to failures that require total engine replacement.

IMO the most problematic engine with actual engine problems would have been the 2.9. The 2.8 had an overcomplicated engine control system but basically the engine itself was pretty sound IMO.
For $3500 you are going to run the gauntlet on how the engine has been cared for over the years, it is hard to say "get this engine and you will be safe" If I were to get a Ranger, it would probably be a 3.0 though. They are a darn tough little engine that gets pretty decent milage.

My '97 B4000 has a 4.0 OHV and it works great. At 100K+ and 15 yo, its only probs were a intake manifold gasket leak, and the IAC valve. What's not to like?
