I put in a 1994 stereo in my 1992 Ranger and I like it a lot. Only thing I would like to do is get some more bump out my speakers. Is there a low cost way to add in an amp to the factory system and maybe some speakers upgrades to get the stock stereos to sound a little better?

The other advantage to running a stock head unit is that no one will break into my truck to get it!

if your running stock speakers probably not. You might be able to get a different head unit with more wattage output but seeing as you just replaced that probably not an option. I wouldn't put in an amp for your highs and mids youre spending more money than need be on somethings thats not going to help that much, if i was trying to upgrade for say less than 150 id go to a pawn shop get some mid speakers IN BOXES something like 6x9s or maybe 5 or 6 in speakers. and get a new head unit from the pawn shop too then go online and get some tweeters brand new they arent that much and used ones arent worth the risk. Before you think you can do this consider that usually brand new cars stock sounds systems will crackle when you start getting to the end of the volume knob. If you really want a sound system save up and spend a few hundred dollars at least. There are also car audio forums out there that can probably tell you what to do, car audio is just one of my minor hobbies. Edit: was just thinking try turning your stereo all the way up if you get crackle then theres no point in putting more power to those speakers because your volume knob is really just increasing wattage to your speakers.

A small powered sub, maybe. Don't expect hifi sound coming from those factory speakers though. I knew a guy that did this to a complete stock Toyota T100 and it added a nice little bump to the music, but not much.

Thanks for the responses so far.

I should have said I'm not an audio guy and I know there is a lot to making a car system sound great and I shouldn't expect too much given that I want to stick with the stock unit.

That said, about 10 years ago, I put an after market woofer box into my German sedan. Some guy had made a kit that tied the amplified woofer into the standard harness so that hook up was a snap. The stock stereo with 10 speakers already sounded decent but with the woofer, it was really great so that sometimes I took the long way just to finish listening to the song on the radio. I even sat in my driveway a few time just listening to music because my car system was better than my home system.

With so many Ford Explorer/Ranger/Bronco units sold, I had hoped someone out there came up with a similar bass upgrade for the Ford sound systems so that us average motor heads could get decent sound without having extensive audio knowledge.

i put a woofer in my B2 pretty cheap one made it way more enjoyable to drive but wasnt exactly a system you hear from blocks away or anything like that. was 105 for the sub cant remember on the amp it was a blaupunkt subwoofer tube my B2 had plenty of space to strap the tube down in the back though. If youre talking about wiring amps thats pretty much extensive knowledge without getting into ohms and voice coils excursion etc. but it sounds like you dont want anything crazy. try sonic electronix they have good deals usually. get a sub an amp off there you can even get combos that are perfect for each other do research before you commit google youtube etc. then also consider you need to buy a kit to wire an amp into your vehicle. if you give me a reasonable price range i can try and help you out see what i can find. but probably at least 200 for new. If you know how to do general wiring you can wire an amp you string the cable from the deck to where you mount the amp and the power cord hook in the woofer and your good to go the hardest part for me was getting the nuts off my battery clamps to hook up my power cable.

For home or car a powered sub should be your first upgrade.
It is a challenge, space wise, in a truck cab but for sound quality that is the first thing to look at.

Agreed and with out enough cubes in your cab you will never get quality but you can get plenty of loudness. as far as fitting the sub and box in there they make boxes that will fit behind the seat even in a loner cab truck.

What I did with mine( not the cheapest but not the most expensive) Ne head unit (pioneer) Kicker 10" woofer (300Watt) and factory boss speakers out of an expedition. All together ran me about 300 bucks. She sounds bitchen though.
