I recently picked up this Ranger as a new project. I previously had a 88 Super Cab XLT with a 2.9/5 speed so I sorta know my way around these trucks, lol. This one was a non-runner when I got it and was told the fuel pump was bad. The PO told me he was driving and it just shut off and wouldn't restart. Truck has a relatively new battery with full charge. I've checked fuel (40psi on the rail) and spark (getting fire to the cylinders). I replaced the ignition switch as well as the ignition lock cylinder - both were worn and appeared to be the original parts. The lock cylinder would spin all the way around!

When I turn the ignition switch to start, there is a loud whine from the engine and it will slowly turn, certainly not at normal starting speed. I would guess the starter, but the initial whine really baffles me. Any ideas as to why the engine is dragging, not starting? What should I check next?

I posted a video of my attempt to start it on YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j3q6440_6Hg

Any help with this appreciated! Thanks!

It could be the starter is shot so you'd have to test that to see. If the wires in the starting circuit have not been checked for corrosion, contact, and connectors then it could also be simply something is not allowing the power to get through to the starter. Typically if that were the case you would get a click click click from the solenoid on the fender but it may actually turn over.

Did you try jumping the solenoid on the fender? If nothing happens there then it might help to remove the wires to the starter and inspect them, clean up or replace their contacts and ensure they are tightened to their connecting points.

Test the battery with a Volt Meter and make sure you have at least 12.4 volts before doing anything else.

The engine simply stalling and not starting for a few minutes could be the ignition module overheated...but it will start once that cools off...so more likely not that in your case but it could be the ground on the module needs to be cleaned up. Did you remove the module at some point?

It's not unusual to be dealing with more than one problem and running around in circles in the process. Important to not try parts swapping until you've been able to test things to narrow it down.

Anyway, I hope that gives you something to check and confirm so you can get them off the possible problem list.

Hi Mark:

I apologize for not thanking you for the suggestions. I just today got to work on the Ranger again. I had picked up a "pick and pull" starter and installed it today. Same symptoms as before. However, I missed something that is pretty easy and would explain why this appears to be a mechanical issue. There was absolutely no coolant whatsoever in the engine, radiator, etc. I'm guessing the PO cooked the engine and that's why it turns over so slowly with the grinding sounds.

I guess I'm going to move forward with the V8 swap instead of pursuing further diagnosis of this engine!

Before condemning, try rotating the crankshaft using a wrench on the bolt at the front end of the crankshaft. It may be a starter problem or a flywheel/ring gear problem. The Lima is pretty forgiving of overheating, and would more likely start to leak at the head gasket if overheated. See if it turns with a lot of difficulty or is not too hard to turn. Or get yourself set up for a lot of work doing a V8 swap.

Thanks for the suggestion, Tom. The engine will turn over with the starter, but very, very slowly. I've ruled out spark and fuel issues, made sure the battery and all connections are sound, replaced the starter, etc, so I have to assume its an internal engine problem. I had always planned on a V8 swap for this truck, but had wanted to use it around town until I collected the pieces needed for the swap. All things considered, a V8 Ranger swap isn't that difficult if well thought out, compared to other swaps, so I'm not too concerned about it. Just a change in the timing of when it happens.....
