Hey guys, I am just trying to collect some information.

My truck has a V8 and 4R70W in it from a 96 Explorer. It also has the stock D35 TTB and Ford 8.8.

My ultimate dream is to swap in a 4406 (a real transfer case as opposed to the AWD one I am going to use for now) and find driveshafts from vehicles that bolt up. No custom made ($$$) driveshafts.

However I have heard and read many different things so I figure that I would see if anyone has first hand experience:

Rear Driveshaft:

From this thread http://www.ranger-forums.com/8-cylinder-tech-34/5-0-ranger-4406-t-case-139472/

-It appears that the rear driveshaft can be sourced from a reg cab short box 4x4 V8 F150 (120inch wheelbase) (97-03, same year the 4406 can come from)

Also I have heard that expedition driveshafts will work??? Unconfirmed

Front:

I have heard that the one from the F150 will work straight up (4406 to D35)

I have also heard that that only works for D35 IFS

I have also heard that the front F150 shaft works for a D35 TTB using a conversion U-joint

Anyways...that all I got. Anyone else?

Hit up hoosier1104 and rwenzing. Both have used the 4406 in their swaps, but both had the non ttb d35 ifs. They are the only ones that I know of that used the 4406, im in the process of another sport trac V8 swap, using the 4406, but again, its not the ttb...

I believe changed cuz of fitment issues, not driveshaft issues. Fyi, the 4407 is the same as the 4406, except a fixed rear output, found in SD's...

Alright I will message those guys. What have people done in the past for rear driveshafts? Custom? Anyone else done the short F150 swap?

The 8.8's haven't changed basically ever in the Ranger correct?

Second... What is the difference between the IFS and TTB D35 driveshafts? If they were side by side what would be the differences?

More google-fu...on explorer forum they recommend a "1997-200? Expedition/Navigator 4x4 rear driveshaft, Must be from a 5.4 V8 equipped vehicle"

Looking at the wheelbases of the explorer and expedition (110-120" ish)...I think that this would work with a Ranger as well. Based on that thread I linked stating that a 120 inch ford f150 shaft worked. It would all be 8.8 to 4406 wouldn't it??

Yeah, it hit the frame too much for his liking.

The 8.8's haven't changed basically ever in the Ranger correct?
IIRC they changed the width in the early 90's, and of course most Ranger 8.8's are 28 spline while the 2002 FX4 and 03+ Level II's had the 31 spline with a Torson.

Wonder what the deal is with the 5.4 only thing? Just a little shorter to account for the 9.75 vs the 4.6's 8.8?

The 5.4 is a shorter one by ...4 inches I think I remember reading. All the different 8.8's still have the same bolt pattern tho correct?

Also the 9.75 must have the same bolt pattern if they are doing the swap from the expedition to the explorer?

The ifs 35 is low pinion, the ttb 35 is hi pinion...

So the bolt pattern and overall style is the same? Just the lengths would be different?

They should both use the 1310 or 1330 joint, yes...

I can measure a 2002 F-150 9.75 and an 1996 Explorer 8.8 if you need it, it is probably the same though.

All 9.75" axles are metrc, which is about a 1/16" larger than the standard pattern. You can take a 9.75" rotor, drill it out to 9/16", and it'll fit the 5x5.5 ford pattern...
