So i think i broke the transfer case in my 99 explorer sport with AWD, it's clunking and won't hardly move the truck. I use it for strictly a mud truck and would like to get rid of the AWD feature all together and just have the normal 2hi-4hi-4lo. I don't care if it's electric or manual long as it's cheap to install and i can get it in 4lo to play in the mud. What are my options for a swap?

BW4406 t-case from a 4.6L F-150 will bolt up mechanically with some minor modifications required (i.e hole in the floor for the shifter and possibly "massaging" the floor pan) You'll also need the front driveshaft from the same donor.

Some good info here:

You don't have an AWD case if you have 4x4 buttons (which your previous posts suggest). The Auto 4x4 is not all wheel drive. Auto 4x4 is in 2wd most of the time. If it sees wheel slippage it will shift into 4-hi without any input from you, but it is not in 4-hi all the time.

Correct, as far as I know your stock rear drive shaft will bolt up.

I read that thread that was posted last night. That looks to be a little more than i really want to do on this, in the end it's just a totaled out explorer that i could never use for anything but playing around offroad.

I was researching last night and from my gathering i think a bw1354 from an 02 explorer is exactly what i need. Everything will bolt right up, including the shift motor so i don't have any lights on, and I'll be able to have 2wd.

got it finished up yesterday and got it out to try out the new setup. shift switch works great and I do def have 2wd now. im unsure totally if I have 4hi or not but I do have 4lo. that's fine with me since I only play in 2wd and 4lo anyways.

heres a lil vid of me going through a lil mud trying out 2wd.
