Looking for expert advice on whether or not I can interchange the 1-2 shift forks between 1987 and 1988 TK5 parts. The part numbers are identical minus the year reference.

1987 Part #: E7TZ7230A
1988 Part #: E8TZ7230A

I've seen the .pdf file in the TRS library for the 83-87 TK5...but not for 88 or newer. Link: 83-87 TK5 .pdf

Thank you in advance for any help.

My guess is that you would have to examine both parts side by side and compare.

On one hand, they might be exactly the same, because TK and Mazda transmissions are related (Toyo Kogyo IS Mazda...) and the TK 5's may very well share certain internal parts and/or may have been reused with new part numbers when the switch to M5OD transmissions was made.

On the other hand, it may just be a weird coincidence. I have run into this with Ford part numbers before where things that were supposed to be an exact fit are totally wrong and I end up with something for a different application that fits perfectly but shouldn't.

TK-5 transmissions were not used in 1988 and later trucks at all, and that's why it's weird, and makes me think that they did in fact use the same part and update the number for use with an M5OD. '88 and newer would have either an M5OD or FM-146.

Thank you for the reply. It's looking like it's the other hand at the moment. As soon as I verify, I'll post an answer. Then again, how many people are looking for a 1987 TK5 3-4 shift fork?

Slight shift to the original question...

Are the 1-2 shift forks from a 1986 and 1987 TK5 interchangeable?

1986: E69Z7230A
1987: E7TZ7230A

Both are referenced as part 51 in the .pdf.

This is the last part I need in my TK5 tranny restore.

Solved.

The answer to the original question 'Is E8TZ7230A interchangeable with E7TZ7230A?' is no.

E8TZ7230A

But, E69Z7230A is.
