I would go AOD if you are stuck with an automatic.

Never done it but I have heard to can change the ratios by mixing and matching parts out of a 4R70W if you so desire.

3-speed trans with OD for 4th gear

AOD Ratios
First: 2.400:1
Second: 1.467:1
Third: 1.00:1
Overdrive: 0.667:1

Ford did something interesting in the late 1990's with computer control transmissions to get a 5-speed model out of a 4-speed

They added a new "second gear" by leaving 1st engaged and then turning on the OD as the new 2nd gear, giving a ratio of about 1.80:1
So instead of the big jump from 2.4 to 1.4 there was a smoother 1.8 shift and then a shift to 1.4
And it was just computer software that was changed
I was reading some old post' They say there is only three shifts on the aod 1st 2st and od But why dose the shifters like B&M say you need a four speed shifter?

You start out in first. It "shifts" to second before it "shifts" to third and finally it "shifts" to fourth (overdrive). Three "shifts" in a four speed trans.

My three speed only shifts twice. First to second and second to third.

And for what it is worth I have the B&M Unimatic shifter that will work on either trans (just about any automatic IIRC, it came with a ton of linkages)

So I have a B&M star shifter three speed and your saying it won't work?

No, AOD is a 4 speed
And yes, like 85_Ranger pointed out there is no "shift" to 1st, so a 4 speed automatic would only "shift" 3 times, 2nd, 3rd, 4th(OD)
A 3 speed 2 times

But it could work, you just wouldn't have manual select for 1st
3 speed shifter on a 4speed trans would be like this:
P-R-N-OD-3-2

But would look like this:
P-R-N-D-2-1

The linkages for the shifters are kind of unique, an aftermarket one for one model may not even attach up to a different model of transmission.

My Unimatic came with a bunch of different brackets to fit just about any trans from the big 3 (and maybe others, I don't remember) Best bet would be to go to B&M or Summit for the installation instructions and look up your model of shifter and see if it can be set up to operate on different transmissions.
