ok dont hate me. and i know this has been discussed before. i have either a chevy 350 or a chevy 307 motor i would like to stick in my ranger. im leaning towards the 350. either which way i wanna know as to what kind of alterations will be needed. i know the firewall because of our big honking distributors. but will the oil pan clear? how bout engine mounts. i plan on using stock chevy ram manifolds. will i need to fabricate mounts or can i use stock chevy pieces? i have 1 tk4 speed, so i wanna keep it a manual. what king of tranny will work? and what will i have to adapt to make my hydraulic clutch work? will my stock rear hold. im not dragging or beating the crap out of it. will it hold for some light duty, 170 horse, maybe some 1st gear drops? any help is great. and yes i have already been over putting a 302 in it. 1 dont have one, 2 have no money to buy one, 3 have 2 good engines looking for a home. and my 2.3 is just pathetic. im only a saftey inspection so emissions is not a concern

HEY GUYS, THANKS FOR ALL THE HELP, THE NEW BUILD THREAD IS HERE http://www.therangerstation.com/forums/showthread.php?p=863069#post863069

PHOTOBUCKET DELETED ALL THE PICS HERE. SORRY

I don't hate ya..........:>)

The BIG distributor can be eliminated in lue of a SMALL cap HEI (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Chevy-REAL-Ready-to-Run-Distributor-SBC-BBC-Coil_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33690QQihZ016QQitemZ260354288445QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW), the ram horn exhaust manifolds should be ok, as that's what I used on my Son's 93........BUT as far as the standard trans, I have NO IDEA!
I'd personally put a T350 w/kit in it & some descent gears in the azz.

Post some pics of the build as ya go...............

I'm not sure what they are called, but an S10 4.3 5spd trans will bolt right up to any sbc engine. They also run a hydraulic clutch. Hope this helps some.

there is a kit somewhere that some guy on a hot rod forum sent me. It is for a bellhousing that goes with the S10 5 speed. Or you could use a T5 from a Firebird from the 80's is what he said he used. I gave up and I'm keeping my auto for now....but I def miss the stick shift. what ever you use let us know so I can use it too :icon_thumby:

ok so im leaning towards either a th350 or a th700r4 trans instead of a manual. probably the 700 for the overdrive plus mine is already rebuilt. my question is, the engine is about 200 horse. will my 7.5 rear hold? its just a dd. and if i put 2 electric fans on the rad that run all the time. will the stock rad be ok, or is there a cheap upgrade from a bronco or explorer that fits? thanks

With only 200 hp, the 7.5 should last depending on tires and traction, running an auto helps a lot in the drive line shock. Still sounds like a fun project!

My Son's 93 V8 (355/T350) Ranger has a 3.73 geared 7.5 outta 87 Bronco II & it has held up without any problems to date...........he doesn't abuse it daily, but it has been hammered a time or three:yahoo:

Here's a vid of it shortly after I built it a few years ago:

And this one from a couple weeks ago when he was showin off to his BIL:

My credo
it is easier to fix and understand than "her"
if you hammer on it all the time it will die. donuts on pavement kill them fast with a heavier truck...small tire 2wd should last plenty though. a locker will improve its life expectancy for sure. the spiders are what usually causes death when they explode.

700 will be nice...but with only 200 hp the 1-2 shift is a big hit performance wise if you run like 342 or taller gears.

as to the fans run a chevy summit radiator and mod the core support to put it out front with a taurus fan between it and the engine and a factory taurus/tempo ircm or a couple 30 amp relays with a camaro temp switch to run the fan..

all shit i can get at the junkyard dirt cheap/sometimes free save for the radiator which is like 180 to your door from summit...well worth the cost.
combine that with an expansion can from a later vehicle. and if you want ac a remote gm van unit plummed will make it easier to do.

so are you suggesting the use of a th350 or the th700r which is all rebuilt? im not touching the rear. its gonna be a daily driver.

My credo
JESUS Loves Ya!
If it matters, I hear the th-700 is better on gas mileage for a (daily driver), & there are sites that show you how to use the original internal switches to re-wire the xmszn so it will go into over-drive when you want it to. I,m not gonna change the rear gears on mine--I'll just avoid hole shots:icon_hornsup:
