I had a flowmaster 40 series on it, but disliked how i lost all tone after the engine warmed up and the pipes swelled. So i replaced it with a y pipe. I still have both cats tho. At a cold start, my truck has a really deep groan you can hear inside the cab, and sounds deep and aggresive on acceleration, and keeps the tone even after cruising the highway for 30 minutes at 65 mph. Mission accomplished. But it still rides quiet enough down the highway that i can hear the radio on its lowest setting, which is good for long trips :)

Anyone else have their ranger straight piped?

I did. Put a 24" glass pack on it after a few years.

My Ranger had a straight pipe when the exhaust fell off after the cat.....

It was cool like that for about the first 5 miles on the highway, then I hated it and was looking for earplugs to stuff in my ears. Maybe its just a sign that I'm getting older......

I am running true duals on mine but then again I have a 5.0 now. Man do I ever not regret doing that swap.

Why does everyone frown on straight pipes? im runnin the 4L v6 in my truck and guys it literally rumbles. Its not high pitched at all, or obnoxiously loud. It has a really deep "snarl" at acceleration. Its perfect IMO.

I think its frowned on mostly for the performance loss associated with practically no back pressure. There are no gains from straight pipes on a fuel injected V6. In reality you lose bottom end torque and just make a whole bunch of extra noise.

Well s technically im not running it true straight piped because i still have all my cats on, and there is still back pressure, because i still get the back pressure pops on deceleration and when coasting down a hill, like i did with the flowmaster. Probably not as much as i had before however.... But actually, call me crazy, but i have noticed a gain in acceleration. i can get to 60 a little quicker now than i could before.... and no, its not because i have a lead foot and want to hear the truck, i actually prefer to keep the rpms low, when the sound is better.

You'll notice it if you have pulled a trailer before you straight piped it and the next time you pull one with the same/similar load. I did the same thing with my truck and it felt pretty gutless with a trailer behind it and no muffler.... sure did sound mean but thats all it did was make noise.. just sayin.
