Any ideas on how to make a simple homemade hitch?
I dont plan on towing anything very heavy, a 17.5 foot bay boat at max.
I am planning on a body lift so I would like a hitch and I dont seem at ease paying $140 for one

thanks in advance, kyler

My credo
If you're not making mistakes, you're not learning.
Basically the same as the ones you're looking at, just welded up yourself. There's not much to them.

Some plate steel, and 2" square stock (probably at least a good 3/16" thick or so) is all you need.

Yep, that's just about it, just be sure to double check your measurements and get a good seam weld.

There USED to be companies that sold weld-it-yourself hitches. Not sure if any of those are still kicking around or not.

you can pick up the reciever part with a cast collar around the outside and with a hole for the pin already drilled in it, theyre aound $15-20, then you just have to do the measuring and material gathering and then weld it all together. we own rangers, we fab our shit!

oh, and don't forget to check your insurance policy should an accident happen. AAA for one doesn't like to cover on many vehicle mods. just a thought.

Maybe if your joe shmoe you will get roped at the steel suppliers. You can always find good deals on steel if u look around. With my BL I chopped 3 inches and raised it up to look factory. Just find a good used one and section it that would be an easy way

I am ALL for fabbin' stuff also....

Just some friendly advice...if you are not an excellant welder, buy a hitch.

The liability is far too great for such an in-expensive item.

I don't want to be the "family of four" that gets killed when your 17 1/2 foot boat rips your welds apart and the boat crosses 4 lanes of traffic striking my car.....

If you ARE a great welder...grab two of them at the pick-n-pull and cut them apart and fab what you need. They go for about $15 around here.

Not sure where your lookin but the last hitch I bought was only bout 75. At that price wasn't worth my time to fab one. Do some more checking, not just on line. I just priced a new class 5 hitch for my superduty and it was 150. And i agree that unless your a great welder but one. Just my 2 cents.

Not only should you be a good welder, but you have to remember that there is a fair amount of engineering that goes into those hitches too. They don't just weld up a bunch of steel and hope for the best. Cost to buy one versus the safety of you and everyone else on the road is worth it.

Just my. 02.
