A legend to the old man, a hero to the child...
Pricing dont matter to the aimed market for new trucks/suvs/whatever.

All that matters is if they are nice enough to fool a bank into finacing one for 5-7 years while some fella who "had to have a new truck" pays "an affordable 475 a month" just to impress the neighbors.

When you do an inflation calculator off of older trucks really new ones are not far out of line.

I found the window sticker for a nice '98 F-150 in the JY. XLT 5.4, 4wd, extended cab shortbox... pretty decent truck. Sold for $27k new! Hot dang what a deal right?! Comes out to around $42k in today's dollars... which is about what a comparable new F-150 runs :annoyed:

The problem is salaries have not kept up with inflation.

Yeah I was thinking about one and I built it and it’s about the same price as I been pricing a f150 for with the 5.0. I think they will drop after they first don’t sell.

Which does make it far out of line. A bare bones 4x2 with zero options is over 25000. ?? I'm better off getting a regular cab F 150 4x4 for about 30000-31000 or get a good used last generation ranger. The 4x4 Ranger with zero options is over 29000

An F150 XL with 4x4 starts at $32,350. If you need the capacity of an F150 that's obviously a good choice. If not, you can get a Ranger with extra interior space for less money. For me, that would be an easy decision towards the smaller truck.

There's also the lingering question about the actual price on the Build & Price system that 85_Ranger4x4 mentioned previously - the initial prices displayed when choosing a version is different than what you see afterwards. That would bring the Ranger to $28,460 base.

Not happy with the prices here. Was seriously considering pulling the trigger but can't justify it at that cost. Maybe once some used ones start showing up.

Ford needs to do better at entry level vehicles in general. They are all expensive and ugly. Wife and I looked out the Ecosport for her and I was not impressed with the looks or features. Ended up with an Encore with more features and a better appearance for less money. Also, I'm ready for they Sync system to go away. I would much rather have Android Auto or Apply Car Play.

Lots of incentives right now for an F 150. Just say a 2018 Regular Cab for under 32000 with 4500 worth of options.(rear camera etc.) As for interior space. Big deal. I never carry more 1 passenger. The regular cab of an F 150 has tons of leg room. If i want to carry crap with me....a nice tool box In the spacious 8 foot bed will do me fine. Plus as a bonus I get the less corrosive aluminum body. Win win

You are not touching a 5.0 Lariat Supercrew for $37k.

5.0 Lariat starts at $44,375. Want 4wd? Make it $47,800.

Gotta keep the options similar or it isn't going to line up.

Another thing that adds cost is they don't really have the options very efficient. On the '150 I can do XL, chrome appearance package (so bumpers are not swiss cheese in 5 years) and FX4. Ranger I gotta have the $995 STX package to get the FX4 and an order of swiss cheese painted bumpers. Can't get FX4 without STX and you can not get FX4 with chrome bumpers.

And 4wd costs $510 more to add to the Ranger than it does than the F-150.

F-150 price stays closer to the same when you hit configure too, when I did it on the 4wd Lariat it went to $47,795. Instead of gaining $1000+/- it lost $5. :icon_confused:

I think for as long as we have waited we are still getting an experimental truck builder thing.

Apparently after selecting a base configuration, the builder system assumes things about dealer incentives that would affect final price that aren't shown on the initial screen.

The only new ranger I've ever bought was an 86 gt. MSRP was 10,700. Was a great truck put 365,000 miles on it and had to get rid of it. Haven't spent more than 1800 on a ranger since. I love rbvs but I just can't see paying 30,000 plus for a new vehicle at this point in my life. I'd much rather just build what I really want for much less.

You are comparing a top of the line Ranger with leather to a bottom of the barrel XL F-150.

And the Ranger is not on sale yet. Your XL is $41k msrp compared to the Lariat Ranger at $37k.

Not bottom of the barrel with a 5.0 and 10 speed if it had the 2.7 that would be bottom of the barrel

Actually 3.3 is the base engine.

One is the base model. XL is the lowest trim level for a Ford truck. Lariat is a higher trim with leather seats. The highest possible trim level for a Ranger. Within the top 2 or three levels for an F-150.

I don't know how else to put it, the trucks you are comparing are not fair to compare to each other.
