My 2002 Ranger had a check engine light and I took to have it diognosed and it showed a ERG foul. then I replaced it with a new one and removed the negitive cable to reset. the light went off and then came back on in a couple of minutes so I took to a local shop and had it cleared. while driving away it returned again with the same trouble code.
question is did I need to do something special during the replacement? I just took the old one off and put the new one on.
thanks for the help.

What was the actual code that it displayed? The computer does not (cannot) tell you that a component has failed, only the entire circuit it belongs to. In this case, it may have been a sensor in the EGR system and not the valve itself. Knowing the code number is an important first step.

Good bet its the DPFE sensor and not the valve.

There is a TSB out for most Fords with almost any EGR flow codes that say "replace the DPFE first, perform normal diagnostics later".

OK co says P1401
DPFE sensor circuit high
ECM detected the DPFE (EGR pressure sensor) sensor voltage higher than expected
so I guess I replace this "DPFE"?

I'm 100% sure you need to learn to spell.

And no.

That is the big code for DPFE replacement. Just get a sensor.
