Have a 1998 4.0L with a bad transmission. Has anyone swapped a 5R55E from a 1997 into a 1998-2000? From what I can see I just use the 1998 harness and leave out the mechanical speedometer gear in the 1997.

Is there anything else missing from a 1997 5R55E transmission that the 1998-2000 has?

Not sure if it will work but if you want some advice I say loose the 5r55e. They're garbage. Being a 97 I think you can adapt a c4 too it. Might be something worth looking into.

I just want to get the 1998 going and dont feel like playing the odds with junkyard transmissions when I have a few perfectly fine 5R55E transmissions sitting in the yard from 1997 4.0s

I know the speedometer gear is not on the 1998 transmission because it gets its reading from the ABS sensor over the rear end. Other than that difference are all the other sensors on both transmissions the same? Can the 1998 harness be used as plug an play?

Also ive got nothing against the 5R55E. Oversized tires, lots of off road, and hauling wood every week. Never had an issue with one and I have a few with over 200,000 original miles, no rebuilds just filter and fluid changes every 15,000 miles.

I've been through 3 of them since I bought my truck in 05. The first one (the original) lasted 83k. The other 2 only about 10k. I do push my truck pretty hard and I do have full width axles. I never hear anything good about them either. Sounds like you've had some good luck though. I would suggest a
m50d-r1 swap but its a lot of work. I did it and it was totally worth it for me but....

Good luck dude. Im sure it will work.

5R55E Is a great trans. I have 148k on mine and it shifts like new. The only problem they ever had was a valve body issue. I did a valve body upgrade on mine with great results.
