Damn you guys are expensive.

Okay, I didn't spend much buying the early Bronco D44 ( $100). But I bought 4340 inner axles, 4.88 ring & pinion, an aggressive posi (Auburn), install kit, much of the stuff to do chebby outers.

Then its a good idea to go Dana 60. ($200) So the D44 is sitting doing nothing.

Now its a better idea to go HP D60. ($750 before mods.)

I should sit back, crack a beer and wait for a cheap set of Rockwells to hit Craplist. If you guys need me I'll be on Tumblr.

It is just money. I think you need to go find some portal axles next.

But I'm poor and apparently, gullible.

Portal axles, huh? Lets just cut to the chase. Are any of you guys parting out an AGCO Rogator or something similar?

Well think of it this way. You can buy that hp60, sell everything else and put a locker, gears in that and you won't ever break it. The D44 is tough but if you bind it up in a tight spot a U-joint will blow. Come off a rock a little too hard because of a potential roll over and you might crack the diff.
That 60 won't bat an eye at what you'll be throwing at it! Plus it's so heavy that it actually works in your favor and prevents a lot of roll overs by holding you down!

Buds, I have a 60. See page 36. And I can upgrade it for less than buying the HP one. I don't hear the chebby guys bitching about their version running on the coast side or that they grenade them. Ever, actually.
I think I'm gonna stick with my original plan. Use the "undesirable" Dodge axle because its a guinea pig. Also because I can't afford to change my pisspoor plan midstream.

After some more disassembly of the rear 60, I think I'm gonna replace this axle. The axle shafts and bores for them seem small (almost D44 sized) to me.
Its at a point where it has nothing going for it. Its had water in it, its 16 spline, drums and 4" narrower than I'd like.
Sure I could overcome all these things but why? The right axle would cost less in the long run.

I'm gonna take a mulligan on this one.

I'll recover.
A good rear axle shouldn't need aftermarket shafts. At least to my way of thinking. Danas do. So I'm going to research the 10.25 Sterling and 14 bolt, both readily available and relatively cheap.
It was interesting to note that truck pullers avoid Dana rear axles. Something to think about.

Edit: I hate posting these because of the Craigslist failure rate but am working on getting a front HP 60 today.

Well, I'm $1100 thinner tonight but I've solved my axle situation, probably.
Bought a 86 F350 crewcab 4x4 with a kingpin D60 in front and a Sterling out back. Its got 36x16.5 Swampers on it with a Sky mfg shackle reverse kit for lift. Engine is a 351w with (I'm guessing) a C-6 with a manual T-case (Idk what though.) Lots of mileage, dents and a very rusty floor.
But it runs, and its mine. Have title. Will pick up on the weekend.
